“Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a great pleasure for me to be here on my first official visit to Colombia at the invitation of President Juan Manuel Santos.
Although the Principality of Monaco and the republic of Colombia may have little in common in terms of size or population, we share many goals in many areas, such as tourism, sport and the environment.
Through this visit, I wished to discover a country and its countless assets: a country, like mine, which enjoys an exceptional geographic position open to the Sea and indisputable tourist appeal ; and a people that has shapes its own destiny over the centuries despite daunting challenges.
During my short stay, I will have the great pleasure of visiting the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Nature Park, one of the world's highest coastal ranges, whose majestic mountains and snow-capped peaks are truly amazing.
Your country's assets include major sites of national and international historical, cultural and architectural interest and the San Lorenzo Experimental Station. It also boasts a great variety of flora and fauna which can boost the development of many touristic, cultural and economic activities, along with research and environmental education, to which I am particularly attached.
I will also have the opportunity to attend the Regional Conference on Ocean Acidification organised jointly with my Foundation and the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, addressing issues of the highest importance in the framework of preserving our environment and oceans.
You are well aware of my unflagging commitment to environmental protection, especially preservation of the Oceans, which act as ecological regulators for our Planet.
This is why I would like to highlight the efforts Colombia has undertaken for the protection of the Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, in particular the recent extension of its Marine Protected Area, essential for bolstering conservation.
I would also like to express my great satisfaction with the cooperation set up by Colombia's scientific authorities with our Scientific Centre and Monaco's explorations in the field of oceanographic research with Invemar in the Eastern Pacific corridor, conducted jointly by Prof. Patrick Rampal and Dr. Sandra Bessudo.
And I would like to pay special tribute to your country's initiatives, especially through collaboration with the Peace and Sport Association, which illustrates your capacity to take innovative action.
Cooperation between our two States will become effective soon, I hope, with the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding. This should, in particular, help pursue activities of Peace through Sport developed for several years by now by this Association in your territory.
Such are the themes I will be discussing here with the Colombia's Highest Authorities, with the prospect of strengthening our ties, so dear to our heart.
Thank you.”
