On 10th September this year in New York, the joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between our two countries was signed.
The Republic of Vanuatu thus became the 139th State to establish diplomatic relations with the Principality of Monaco.
In order to continue in this dynamic, I chose Dr Patrick Morvan - whom you have known very well here for many years - to take up the position of Monaco's Honorary Consul in Vanuatu. This request, recently made, is in the process of confirmation by the Authorities, for which I am delighted.
I understand, from my visit today and by discovering various places and enjoying incredible sceneries, all the pleasant charms that this State, located on the Coral Sea, has to offer.
The Principality shares many concerns with the Republic of Vanuatu. My country is working, particularly in the context of combating climate change, on actions for protecting the oceans, the seas and their resources, as well as implementing the Sustainable Development Programme, while your Archipelago has experienced forced displacements of its coastal populations.
I know that the "stand land" is a major player in its own future and our two countries will maintain close relations on matters of mutual importance, especially for the preservation of the seas and oceans, despite the kilometres which separates them.
In this regard, I wish to convey to you my great satisfaction, resulting from the signing by the Republic of Vanuatu of the Declaration for the Protection of the Coral Reef which I launched in Malta last year in conjunction with Prince Charles and Queen Noor of Jordan.
As you are fully aware, the good health of coral reefs allows the maintenance of one of the richest biodiversity of our planet, and supports the irreplaceable culture and livelihoods of the populations which depend on it.
Nonetheless, corals are increasingly vulnerable to the consequences of climate change and acidification of the oceans, bleaching and mortality related to temperature changes, rising sea levels, floods and storms of unprecedented intensity and frequency, increased erosion of the reef, overfishing, sedimentation and pollution.
Our aim is therefore to protect them and preserve them.
I therefore welcome the recent steps taken by the Republic of Vanuatu, confirming its desire to join the International Coral Reefs Initiative (ICRI) which has been co-chaired by the Principality of Monaco since July 2018, along with Australia and Indonesia.
ICRI is an informal partnership, established in 1994, comprising States and organisations fighting to preserve the reefs and ecosystems associated with them (mangroves, sea grass beds). Today, the initiative has more than 60 members, including 38 States.
I am delighted to confirm that the request submitted by Vanuatu will be considered at the 33rd General Meeting of ICRI to be held in Monaco from 5 to 7 December.
I remain convinced that many other joint projects will bring us closer together.
